ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (UPI) -- The United Arab Emirates said Saturday it has contracted an Iranian carpet company to make the largest Persian carpet in the world to decorate a mosque.

The official Emirates news agency, WAM, said the head of the Department of Municipalities and Agriculture, Khalfan al-Muheirbi, and Iran`s ambassador in the emirates, Mohammad Ali Hadi, signed a contract to weave the largest carpet for the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in the capital, Abu Dhabi.

It said the Iranian Carpet Co. will weave, by hand, a carpet measuring 5,700 square meters, which will be completed in two years as of the signing of the contract Saturday.

Al-Muheirbi said more than 1,000 'skilled and specialized weavers in Iran' will work on the carpet, requiring 30 tons of wool, 15 tons of cotton and be supervised by 50 experts.

He said 25 different colors will be used and extracted from nature, adding it is expected to weigh about 45 tons when completed and placed on the floor of the main prayer area in the Sheikh Zayed Mosque.

The official did not say how much the enormous piece will cost.

TEHRAN (AFX) - A top Iranian Shiite Muslim cleric blamed the United States for the latest wave of killings in Iraq where Al-Qaeda-linked insurgents have declared war on the majority Shiites.
"Killing in Iraq is on the rise. It is no longer tens of dead but now stands at hundreds. The US is not ashamed of what they have caused and they are not leaving the area," Ayatollah Ahmad Janati told worshippers at weekly prayers.
"Now that the elected Iraqi government wants to put to vote the draft constitution and seeks to establish peace, the US is constantly trying to say that this government ... can not establish tranquility, and it sows differences," he added amid chants of "Death to America."
Janati, who heads Iran's powerful Guardians Council, a constitutional watchdog that screens all laws and elections, charged that Washington was "trying to make the Sunnis fearful of the Shiites and vice versa".
On Wednesday, a suicide car bomber killed 80 people, most of them Shiites waiting to be hired as day laborers, in the Shiite district of Kadhimiyah in the Iraqi capital.
And a suicide car bomber today killed at least 10 people when he blew himself up outside a Shiite mosque in the central Iraqi town of Tuz Khurmatu as worshippers headed out after prayers.
Al-Qaeda's frontman in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, has called for "total war" against the country's Shiites.
Iran's foreign ministry condemned the suicide bombings in Baghdad as "contrary to Islamic values" but said they were further proof that the United States had failed to secure the country.
The Islamic republic, where some 90 pct of the population is Shiite, vehemently opposes the US presence in Iraq and has repeatedly demanded the withdrawal of American troops.

Tehran - Iranians should turn out in huge numbers for the June 17 presidential elections to declare a great "Death to America", said an ultra-conservative Shiite cleric during the Friday weekly prayers.

Ahmad Janati said: "Myself, Imam Khomenei, supreme leader Ali Khamenei and the twelfth imam expect the voters will declare a great 'Death to America' by going to the polling stations."

He was referring to Iran's late revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomenei and the twelfth imam, who disappeared 1 400 years ago and Shiite Muslims believed would return to earth to save the world.

"Death to America" was a rallying cry of the Islamic regime.

Israel 'don't want massive turnout'

Janati said: "The United States and Israel do not want a massive turnout by voters in the election as their interests would be in danger.

"This is why it is important the electors take part massively in the vote."

Janati was the head of the Guardians Council, a non-elected conservative body, which blocked reforms of outgoing President Mohammad Khatami's government and disqualified more than 2 000 candidates from legislative elections in 2004.

This year, it disqualified more than 1 000 candidates from the presidential vote.

Importance of high turnout

Two reformist candidates were only allowed to stand after intervention from the supreme leader, who emphasised the importance of a high turnout.

The Islamic republic was looking for a strong turnout to bolster its position after relatively few voted in last year's legislative elections and amid fears of a large boycott this time.

During the legislative elections, about 51% of voters cast their ballots, the weakest showing in the Islamic republic's history.

Participation was even weaker in large cities, most notably in Tehran, where just over 30% of the electorate took part.

Mullah Ahmad Jannati criticized some presidential election candidates and said they are using "illegal" techniques in their campaigns.

Addressing thousands of bassijis at Tehran University Campus, Jannati accused some of the candidates to "violate laws" in order to win the election.

However, he did not name any specific candidate. Eight candidates are running for Iran's 9th presidential election to be held on June 17.

Ayatollah Jannati added," Now, that these people do not have any official post, they are ignoring law. What would they do when they get the presidential post?"
He warned that if these candidates do not stop their illegal actions, the judicial system would deal with them.

Jannati advised the next president to avoid nepotism in selecting his colleagues and choose the officials on their merits.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - A leading hardline cleric urged Iranians on Friday to turn out in force for presidential elections next week, warning that a low turnout would be a defeat for the Islamic republic.

Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati refrained from endorsing any of the eight men vying for the job in June 17 polls, but called on people to defy Iran's "enemies" by ensuring a high turnout.

"The prestige of the Islamic republic depends on your votes. It is our religious and political duty to vote," Jannati told worshippers at Friday prayers at Tehran University. "Your votes will make the country stronger."

The clerical establishment has been trying to overcome apathy and disillusionment among voters, particularly young Iranians, over the slow pace of President Mohammad Khatami's reforms since his landslide election wins in 1997 and 2001.

Khatami is barred from standing for a third consecutive term.

Half the country's 67 million people are under 25 and the minimum voting age is 15. But many have indicated they will not vote.

Jannati said the country's enemies, a reference to the United States, had been trying to discourage Iranian voters through the "bombardment of hostile propaganda," aimed at questioning the Islamic states' legitimacy.

"If you want to make America angry, make queues at voting booths," Jannati said.

Washington accuses Iran of sponsoring "terrorism" and trying to develop nuclear weapons. Iran denies the charges.

"Cast your vote as each vote means Death to America," Jannati said in a speech broadcast live by state media.

The crowd of worshippers broke into repeated chants of "Death to America," denouncing the Islamic republic's arch-foe.

MOUNTED CAMPAIGN

As the elections draw near, the Islamic state has mounted a media campaign to urge a big turnout, which officials say would show the popularity and legitimacy of the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, bidding to regain the post he held from 1989 to 1997, is considered the most moderate of the five conservative candidates vying to replace Khatami. Three reformists are also standing.

Rafsanjani holds a commanding lead in opinion polls but is still well short of the 50 percent support he needs to avoid a run-off vote. Former police chief, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, is second in the polls.

Prominent among the large banners at the prayer meeting was one that declared "Iranians, despite the conspiracies of America, will go to the polls."

All eight presidential rivals, aware of the importance of appealing to young voters, have been promising in their campaign messages to create more jobs and ease social restrictions.

But some people remain unconvinced.

"Why should I vote when each vote means a vote for the clerical rule?" said Mahin, 25, one of many young people who seem set to challenge the Islamic state by boycotting the vote.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Uranium enrichment is a right that Iran will never give up, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, the influential former president who is preparing to run again, said on Friday.

Iran's suspension of uranium enrichment activities, which can produce bomb-grade fuel, will not last long, he said. Iran suspended the activities as a goodwill gesture in the run-up to its talks with European Union nations.

France, Britain and Germany, who share the U.S. view Iran may be planning to build nuclear weapons, have been in talks since last year to try to convince Iran to drop its nuclear fuel making in return for economic incentives such as trade deals.

A new round of talks is due to be held in London on Friday.

But Rafsanjani, who is preparing for a June 17 presidential vote, said: "Iran is determined to have all branches of nuclear technology, including uranium enrichment."

"And we will have it at any cost," he told worshippers at Friday prayers in Tehran.

Rafsanjani, head of the Expediency Council policy-making body, said Iran "is strong enough not to let Europeans impose indefinite uranium enrichment suspension."

Washington accuses Tehran of pursuing atomic weapons and has refused to rule out any option, including force, to stop it acquiring them. Rafsanjani said Iran was ready to confront U.S. threats.

TALKS TO CONTINUE

Rafsanjani said Iran would pursue talks with the European Union to give assurances Iran was not pursuing nuclear weapons.

"We have enough patience to continue talks and convince the globe about the peaceful nature of our activities," he said.

"But I tell the Europeans that this kind of attitude, under America's pressure, will not bring about the desired outcome," he added in comments broadcast live on state radio.

Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi said on Thursday Iran would resume its enrichment program if the London talks failed.

Tehran, 8 April (AKI) - Leading prayers in the Iranian capital on Friday - the day of John Paul II's funeral in Rome - former Iranian president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani offered condolences to the world's Christians on the the pontiff's death, the Iranian news agency IRNA reported. "The clear distinction in Pope John Paul II's personality is that he was truly a man of peace and seriously opposed to warmonger tendencies," Rafsanjani said. Iran's current president Mohammad Khatami and his fellow Muslim, Palestinian Authority prime minister Ahmed Querei, attended the pontiff's funeral, along with leaders from all the world's main religions. John Paul II died on Saturday, aged 84, after a long illness.

"The Pope condemned the US crimes in (Iraq's) Abu Ghraib prision and was a staunch campaigner against the Communists' atheist policies," added Rafsanjani, who is currently chairman of Iran's powerful Expediency Council. Rafsanjani, 70, who served as president for two terms in 1989-97, intends to run for president in Iran's July presidential elections.

During his sermon, Rafsanjani invited Christians to heed "Jesus Christ's valuable teachings" more carefully, and said: "both the world's Christians and the Vatican had better take lessons from the late Pope's manners and policies, including heeding their sensitive responsibilities more seriously."

"The followers of Jesus cannot remain Christians and at the same time remain silent and indifferent towards the crimes committed by the US and the other superpowers around the globe... Looting other nations' resources, the exertion of hegemony at international communities and launching misleading campaigns against other countries aimed at distorting their image are definitely against the spirit of authentic Christianity," Ransanjani continued.

During his two terms of office as Iran's president, Rafsanjani tried to encourage closer ties with the the West and re-establish Iran as a regional power. He opposed harsh Islamic penal codes and promoted better job prospects for women. But since the war in Iraq his stance has hardened and he has used Friday prayers to denounce US "plots" in the region.

"The world's Christians should shout in protest against the United States, and tell the White House leaders that their conduct has defamed Christ," he fulminated on Friday.

Iranian radio commented that the attendance of over 200 dignitaries and world leaders at John Paul II' s funeral was an "unprecedented event." "However, we must not forget that the Catholic Church has been losing members at a rapid rate in Europe and other developed countries," it said.

"The massive turnout at the Pope's funeral clearly reflects the world community's strong opposition to America's war-mongering and its unilateralist approach on the international scene. BACK in the age of revolution, it represented the impassioned soundtrack to the tidal wave of Islamic, anti-Western fervour sweeping the nation.
But these days the Iranian revolution’s trademark slogan of Marg Bar Amrika (Death To America) and its sister chant of Death To Israel carries the feel of little more than a nostalgic throwback.

The event was the weekly Friday prayer session at Tehran University, setting – ever since the 1979 revolution – for Iran’s ruling religious Mullahs to exhort the masses to new heights of worship in the quest for a brave new Islamic utopia.

But even against the backdrop of US and Israeli hints of military strikes to combat Iran’s alleged pursuit of nuclear weapons, the faithful responded to the urgings with an enthusiasm that struggled to rise to the level of music.

But whatever the lack of passion, for Ali Razayi, one of those attending, the sentiments of opposition to America – infamously reviled by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the revolution, as The Great Satan – carried a contemporary resonance.

Razayi said: “America stands for dictatorship, being an oppressor and wanting control. Whatever it says about Iran, people are expected to accept.

At 22, Razayi was of a markedly different age to most attending the prayers.

Friday prayers at Tehran University were once at the epicentre of the revolution, the weekly event to which the nation’s militant youth turned in readiness to meet the latest demands for religious purity. Now, if appearances are any guide, the children of the revolution are growing old.

In a country where around 70% of the population is under 30, the overwhelming majority of those present – perhaps nine in 10 – were older men, of around 45 and above, many of them appearing to be relatively poor.

Razayi put the absence of others in his age group down to the No Rouz (Iranian new year) holidays – a festival dating back to the country’s Zoroastrian past – and to the attraction of the day’s football match . Still more, he said, were on pilgrimages.

Abouzar Alontazerolghaem, 25, a student and member of the hardline Basij militia , made no attempt to excuse his fellow age group but launched an attack on the opposition movement that many of Iran’s young people have supported.

“Which is the more legitimate?” he asked. “The people who each year come out in their hundreds of thousands in favour of the government and revolution and aren’t scared to have their faces filmed? Or those who want to call for change by marking down a cross on a secret ballot?”

But it was veterans of the revolution who had the fiercest words. “If they want to come, let them come,” said Sayyid Hosein Babaei, 50, a retired member of the Revolutionary Guards and a veteran of the Iran-Iraq war. “But we are sharpening our knives and preparing our guns. If America attacks, none of its soldiers will leave alive.”"

LONDON, March 18 (IranMania) - A leading Iranian hardliner accused European governments Friday of "deception" and "false promises" in their negotiations on Iran's nuclear programme.

"They decide to give incentives ... nobody believes such false promises," said Ayatollah Ahmad Janati, a conservative cleric who heads a powerful watchdog body that vets all legislation and candidates for public office.

"They are used to lying and blocking progress in other countries," he told worshippers at the main weekly prayers in theran in a sermon broadcast live by state television.

"Negotiations are nearing the end. Their time must be running out... they must end this coming year," he said, referring to the Iranian year that begins on Monday.

Iran is in the midst of negotiations with Britain, France and Germany, who have been trying to secure "objective guarantees" that the clerical regime will not use its atomic energy programme to acquire nuclear weapons.

In exchange, the three European governments are offering a package of trade, security and technology incentives.

The United States accuses Iran of using an atomic energy drive as a cover for developing nuclear weapons, and has threatened to take the issue to the UN Security Council.

"America is pressuring Europeans, who do not mind that. Nobody likes our possession of nuclear technology," Janati charged.

Ideally, the European Union would like Iran permanently to give up uranium enrichment, which makes what can be fuel for civilian nuclear reactors but also the explosive core of atomic bombs.

"They make excuses such as: we are scared of its future, we have to find trust. These are obvious lies and deception," Janati said."

TEHRAN, March 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Iran's powerful former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani voiced hope on Friday that a rational and logical atmosphere could be created to solve the Iranian nuclear issue, the official IRNA news agency reported.

"We hope that rationality and logic would replace a tendency towards monopoly, pride and discrimination in the examination of Iran's nuclear case," Rafsanjani was quoted as saying.

Rafsanjani, who is currently chairman of Iran's Expediency Council, said that no wise person would treat a civilized and strong country which enjoys strong public support and has repeatedly proven itself in many cases of harsh situations like this.

"The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the European Union (EU) and the United States should know that Iran will never forsake its right for conducting nuclear activities," Rafsanjani reiterated.

"The IAEA was duty bound to transfer nuclear technology to all countries, and the Iranian nation, too, should be able to manipulate nuclear technology," he stressed.

As to the IAEA's recent request of "more transparency," Rafsanjani said that Iran had showed transparency of high degree during the cooperation with the agency.

"Iran let the IAEA inspectors be present in all stages of uranium enrichment process though it was quite aware that the inspectors could not legally demand inspections from a number of its sites," he said.

The EU, the broker of the Iranian nuclear issue, has been endeavoring to encourage Iran to halt its activities on the construction of nuclear reactors in exchange for a wholesale of economic and technological incentives.

Washington has accused Iran of developing nuclear weapons secretly, urging to refer the country's case to the UN Security Council.

However, the United States recently softened its stance and showed interest in supporting the EU diplomatic efforts.

The IAEA Board of Governors' meeting on Thursday called on Iran to do more in the cooperation with the agency."

A Temple Hills man plead guilty to charges of raping a 10-year-old girl last summer, the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney office announced today.

Tashaun Vickers, 17, of Temple Hills has agreed to the three charges against him including rape in the first degree, sex offense in the third degree and burglary in the first degree.

Vickers, who is being charged as an adult, will get a 40-year sentence, but will serve at least 20 years.

The charges stem from incidents on July 31 in the 3800 block of 28th Avenue in Temple Hills and on Aug. 16 in the 2400 block of Colebrooke Drive in Temple Hills.

Vickers’s DNA was on a knife found at the first scene and on the screen framing of the second crime scene.

"The defendant has taken responsibilities for his actions. We have held him accountable and it is a favorable plea agreement to secure the peace of mind for the residents of the county," Glenn F. Ivey, state’s attorney for Prince George’s County, said in a press release."

Head of Iran's Guardian Council, Ayatollah Ahmad Janati, on Friday asserted that Iran-EU nuclear talks are going on well.

"The hoped results of the talks have not yet been achieved because the Europeans seem to be wasting the time," Janati said in Friday Prayer Sermon.

"The Iranian nation will never give up its legitimate rights under any pressure." he noted.

Janati underlined that Europeans should work and cooperate with Iran independently and through logical ways adding that Iran accepts to conduct its nuclear program under the supervision of the UN nuclear watchdog.

"If the related talks with Europeans failed to achieve any reasonable outcome, Iran will do what it sees suitable because the suspension of uranium enrichment by Iran is temporary," he added.

Meantime, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Hasan Rohani, during his meeting with the French President Jacques Chirac, emphasized Iran's legal right to make peaceful use of nuclear energy.

TEHRAN, Feb. 11--Chairman of State Expediency Council Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani recommended on Friday that White House officials adopt peaceful approaches toward the Islamic Republic.
Delivering a sermon at TehranÕs weekly Friday prayers, Rafsanjani said the policy of coercion toward Iran will never work, and warned US leaders against the consequences of any action against Iran, IRNA reported.
"I explicitly tell the White House that...these threats will bear no fruit. They will neither frighten us nor our people," he said.
"And if one day you ever think about implementing these threats, you will pay the price yourself."
Rafsanjani, also a former president, said neither Iran nor anywhere in the Persian Gulf is a place for the US to seek adventures.
"We recommend that they try to approach Iran through peaceful means and believe that this revolution is lasting and eternal," he said, adding that the US must recognize the rights of the Iranian nation.
Rafsanjani said most developed countries are today using the nuclear technology to meet their increasing energy needs, stressing that the Islamic Republic cannot be prevented from what it has achieved with regard to that technology.
"You will see that in the future Iran will have all achievements of nuclear sciences at its disposal," he said.
He pointed out that the Islamic Republic is seeking no adventure, and highlighted Tehran's cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as a sign of IranÕs serious efforts to build confidence regarding its nuclear energy plans.
Rafsanjani further warned that Iran will not withdraw from its decision to continue its uranium enrichment activities.
"These enrichment activities are not for military purposes and pursues peaceful objectives. This opportunity is merely for building confidence. You [the Europeans] say the same thing. Of course, the Europeans have said both in writing and in words that they are seeking confidence," he said.
The SEC chief noted that if the Europeans claim that they have developed no confidence despite all that they have seen, it will be then clear that they are not truthful.
"We have given an opportunity [to the Europeans] and expect Europe to use it. We want them to tell us if there is any ambiguity and seek clarification. After this opportunity is over, we will continue our uranium enrichment activities as well as our efforts to develop nuclear energy technology with all our strength and capacities," he said."

TEHRAN (Reuters) - A leading hardline cleric said on Friday Iran was not optimistic about its nuclear talks with the European Union, insisting Tehran would not scrap atomic fuel work which Washington says could be used to make bombs.

"We do not have much hope for these negotiations," Ayatollah Ahmad Janati told worshippers at Friday Prayers in Tehran in a sermon broadcast live on state television.

"But the negotiating delegation, the other side and everybody should know that the (nuclear) fuel cycle is our red line ... If anyone wants to stand against it, our people will stand against them," said Janati, whose comments reflect the view of powerful hardliners within the Iranian leadership.

France, Britain and Germany begin their third round of talks with Iran in Geneva on Monday, which they hope will turn Tehran's temporary suspension of uranium enrichment into a permanent termination of the programme.

Washington says Iran's nuclear programme is a front to develop nuclear weapons, a charge Iran denies. The EU has similar concerns and is pushing Iran to give up sensitive nuclear processes that could be used to make bombs in exchange for a package of political and economic incentives.

Janati talked of a conspiracy by the British members of the nuclear talks to make Iran give up its nuclear technology gradually and for little reward.

Janati heads Iran's Guardian Council which vets all legislation approved by parliament and candidates standing in national elections.

"They are masters of deception, cunning and trickery," said Janati, calling Britain "the father of the Great Satan" -- the nickname for the United States used by Iran's hardliners.

"If they can, they will just give us a candy as sweetener," Janati said.

But Iran's top nuclear negotiator Hassan Rohani, struck a more positive tone on Thursday.

He said recent comments by U.S. President George W. Bush accusing Iran of developing nuclear weapons and sponsoring terrorism reflected U.S. concerns about progress being made in the Iran-EU talks.

"US leaders are worried about Iran reaching a final agreement with the EU," he said in remarks aired on state television."

TEHRAN - Every ballot in Iraq’s elections was a vote against the United States, but the United States did not understand the message and should be kicked out, a top hardline Iranian cleric told Iraqis Friday.

“Every vote counted as a big “no’ to the US, meaning that they should get out of Iraq,” Ayatollah Ahmad Janati, head of the Guardians Council political watchdog, said in a Friday prayer sermon at Tehran University.

“The Iraqis have proved that they are politically mature by demanding the territorial integrity and independence of their country,” he added.

But he added: “I am telling the beloved Iraqis that the US will not leave and that you will have to kick them out.”

Meanwhile, Janati said the vote count following the Sunday election was going well, but that Iraqis should “be attentive.”

“Be careful, so that the Americans do not waste your efforts by plotting in a way that you do not get your desired results,” he said."

LONDON, Dec 26 (IranMania) - The Coordinating Council of Revolutionary Forces has no plans to invite the chairman of the State Expediency Council, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, to take part in the next presidential election, but is working to forge a common understanding with him, a lawmaker from Tabriz said Saturday.

Mohammad Reza Mir-Tajeddini, a member of the Majlis Fundamentalist Faction, told ILNA that members of the group known as 'Followers of Imam Khomeini's Path' cannot remain indifferent towards Rafsanjani's candidacy in the elections set for next May.

Commenting on the likelihood of some candidates of Followers of Imam's and Leader's Path not to contest the vote in favor of Rafsanjani, Mir-Tajeddini noted that they should come to an understanding with Rafsanjani and coordinate with him.

Even though the Coordinating Council of Revolutionary Forces plans to introduce a candidate other than Rafsanjani for the elections, it is not going to pursue a policy of indifference towards the former president and head of the powerful SEC, the legislator said.

The MP gave a negative response when asked if conservative candidates, Ali Larijani, and Ali Akbar Velayati voice their support for Rafsanjani, it would improve the chances of the other rightist candidates, namely Ahmad Tavvakoli and Tehran mayor, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

"If and when the Coordinating Council of the Revolutionary Forces backs one hopeful, that candidate will not withdraw if Rafsanjani decides to run, because that candidate will enter the race after coordination with Rafsanjani.""

He was referring to Iraq's interim government who regularly accuse Iran of destablizing the country, "Such propaganda is strange coming from people who themselves were designated by the Americans".

Last week, Iran's Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi called on Iraqis to turn out and vote in the scheduled January 30 elections. "We want Shiites, Sunnis, Christians, Turkmens and all the other communities of Iraq to take part in the elections." said Kharazi.

Wanting to qualify the statement, Rafasanjani said, "The Iraqis know full well that nobody in Iran is telling them where, how or for whom to vote. But we call on everyone, everywhere in the world, to go and vote to take their own destiny in their hands."

This is while on Friday Sunni Muslim clerics slammed next month's landmark general elections in Iraq as a "masquerade" and renewed a call for the ballot to be postponed.

In what have been billed as Iraq's first free elections in half a century, Sunnis who have dominated the political elite since the 1920s, fear that their power will be curtailed by the long-suppressed majority Shiite Muslims."
